Artwork Autobiography

Use the autobiography chart (PDF) to outline your autobiography.

Create imaginary autobiographies of two portraits. Select images from the artworks related to this activity or make your own selections from www.artsconnected.org.

Present your autobiographies to the class. Point out what you see in the artworks that led to your answers.

Follow-up:
  • If two students wrote about the same portrait, compare and contrast their responses.
  • Ask: “What did you see in the artwork that made you say that?”
  • Ask: “How do artists tell us about people beyond their physical appearance?”
  • Were there any portraits that had more than one answer to “Where are you from?” How is that shown in the portrait?
  • Have students review their own autobiographies, then create self-portraits that express their answers.
